Accounts of the saints of early medieval Ireland and Wales crossing the seas abound in medieval literature. According to the Lives of the saints, ports and harbours around the Irish Sea witnessed the arrival of saints from distant lands, and the departure of others across the waters. Medieval writers located the saints in a time when travel across the sea – by boat or by more unconventional transport – was typical of saints who were called to leave their home behind and witness on other shores.

Artist and historian Dr Martin Crampin, of the Ports, Past and Present project, will offer a Welsh perspective on the connections between Ireland and Wales embodied through the stories of the saints.
